Anna von Schewen - Sculptural and playful
How did you approach the design process of the new hook, what was your inspiration?
I wanted to design a functional hook with a sculptural and playful presence. I made sketch-models of rubber band, a material that creates shapes with a certain kind of elasticity that I transferred to the hook. I wanted the shape to be functional but also interesting enough to function as a solitaire.
How long did the design of the hook take, from the first drawing to the final product?
I worked on the shape for a long time and several tests were carried out to have the exact curves. The hook should invite to hold many different things and be easy to use. As it is casted, the shape has to be adapted so that it can be ejected from the mould.
The new hook Endless is made of aluminium, a material that can be recycled infinitely. Do you like to work with the material because of this characteristic?
It feels good to think that the material has been something else before and will eventually also become something else. It’s possible to recycle which is good but all production takes energy and as aluminium is a durable and strong material, hopefully it will stay in the shape of Endless for a long time.
As a designer, what functions does a piece of furniture for the hallway have to fulfill?
A hallway furniture should be functional and welcoming. You want to find your things when you leave and easily find a place to put them when you come home.
